Nomaco EFS Producing Material To Help Cleanup Oil Spill
A company from Eastern Carolina is playing a part to help cleanup the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. BP is using containment booms and part of that boom is manufactured in Edgecombe County. Nomaco, a manufacturing company in Tarboro, has been producing foam flotation logs for the past 15 years and now the logs are being used in the oil containment booms.
According to Kurt Harmon, the President of Engineered Foam Solutions, a division of Nomaco, "Since April we've produced enough foam to make 850,000 feet of oil boom which is considerably more than a normal season." The foam is put in a boom contraption and that boom is designed to float on top of the water and help contain the oil. That's why, according to Harmon, staff has been beefed up by about 7 employees at the facility and the company is running over time on weekends.
"It's more than just the extra sales, which are nice, with the economy and some other markets being somewhat soft, this is a nice balance to our business, but it's also nice to be able to know we're doing our part and hopefully helping."
